Sails Beach Bar & Restaurant

Located on the beach front within Almanara, this breathtaking piece of architecture is both stunning and unique. The sweeping sails and curving beams create an ambience unparalleled on the east coast of Africa. Our team of chefs are on hand for breakfast, lunch and dinner to bring to you a variety of international flavours perfect for any mood. Fresh seafood is delivered daily by the local fishermen, allowing guests to sample all that the Indian Ocean has to offer.

Our Restaurant

Sails – added to Almanara a year after it’s opening – has since become one of the most popular places to dine in Kenya. When the family began planing for a beach front restaurant they knew that the design would have to be different and would need to blend into the surrounding  beach and gardens. Jan Allan – of ByDesign Kenya – was commissioned to create this eventually stunning piece of architecture. Tasked with placing a maze of steel and canvas on the front line of nature’s most fierce elements, he set about the design and construction of what is today without a doubt one of the most unique structures in Kenya.


Our View

Whilst the structure is superb and the cuisine will tantalise your tastebuds, the setting for your lunch or dinner is truly an assault on all of your senses. Lunches serve up a cocktail of turquoise hues as the gentle Indian Ocean waves slowly up and down the expanse of white sand. Low tide is extra dramatic with almost half a kilometre of beach opening out towards the most superb mixture of blue and green colours that add so much to the dining experience. Coming for dinner? Sundowners before a full moon are truly spectacular. Sip on your aperitif and simply watch the show. A well timed reservation can result in a beach that’s almost entirely illuminated by the Moon above.


Our Chef

Each top class dish that leaves the kitchen window, does so under the watchful eye of Luke Doig – Almanara’s General Manager & Executive Chef at Sails. Luke – a third generation Kenyan – studied in the UK before finding his way in to the Savoy Hotel, one of London’s most prestigious kitchens. His time in London brought him to work with the world famous Roux brothers before heading back to run the kitchen at Nairobi’s illustrious Muthaiga Country Club. Luke arrived at Almanara in 2009 and has since projected Sails to the highest level, creating a reputation as one of the most exclusive restaurants in Kenya.


Our Cuisine

Chef Luke prepares a new menu each week, using only the freshest ingredients. Seafood is his forte with the local fisherman delivering their catch every morning. A mouth watering selection of lobster, prawns, snapper, tuna and more are on offer every day. There are a few favourites that hold their place on the menu each week – such as the Seafood Platter, Fresh Kilifi Oysters and our signature “Sails Crab au Gratin”. All of our ingredients are locally sourced with most of the produce being grown in our 100% organic vegetable. Fancy something sweet?
